Comparison
AuthForge vs Gumroad & Lemon Squeezy Licensing
AuthForge is a dedicated licensing API (HWID seats, Ed25519-signed validation, multi-app credit pool, hosted portal). Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy are merchant-of-record (MoR) checkout platforms that also offer built-in license keys — useful, but intentionally lighter than a full licensing backend. AuthForge integrates with Stripe and Lemon Squeezy for fulfillment; this page explains when MoR keys are enough and when a dedicated layer wins. Verified against Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy public docs as of September 2026. Corrections welcome at hello@authforge.cc.

When MoR license keys are enough
If you sell a single digital product, only need "was this key purchased and not refunded?", and are fine implementing your own device rules on top of Gumroad's use counter or Lemon's activation instances, stay on the MoR. Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy are excellent at tax, payouts, and checkout — AuthForge is not trying to replace them.
When a dedicated licensing layer wins
Add AuthForge (while keeping Gumroad or Lemon for payment) when you need:
- Hardware-locked seats with clear 1–16 device policy and self-serve HWID reset
- Cryptographically signed validation (Ed25519) and replay protection, not only a boolean from a checkout API
- Many apps / SKUs under one licensing balance
- A branded customer portal for license recovery and device moves
- Consistent revocation, bulk issue, and server-to-server management APIs without burning validation credits on admin calls
AuthForge's managed Lemon Squeezy and Stripe fulfillment is designed for this complementary setup: MoR (or Stripe) takes payment; AuthForge runs licensing.
Where Gumroad & Lemon Squeezy licensing still fit
Use MoR-only licensing when your product is simple, you want zero extra vendors, and checkout-integrated keys are sufficient. Lemon's instance model is a reasonable activation counter for many indie apps; Gumroad's verify API is likewise fine for lightweight checks. Prefer them alone until HWID policy, signed responses, multi-app ops, or a licensing portal become real support costs.
Questions developers ask
Does AuthForge compete with Lemon Squeezy?
Only on the narrow "license key API" slice. AuthForge integrates with Lemon Squeezy for fulfillment and is meant to sit beside MoR checkout, not replace tax/MoR features.
Can I use Gumroad for payment and AuthForge for licensing?
Yes in principle via your own automation (webhooks → AuthForge issue). Native managed fulfillment today highlights Stripe and Lemon Squeezy; Gumroad can still be wired through webhooks/API if you prefer that storefront.
Do Gumroad or Lemon provide Ed25519-signed offline grace licenses?
Not as a dedicated licensing product feature set. Their APIs answer purchase/activation state online. AuthForge's signed validation, grace period after online activation, and cloud-minted .authforge files verified locally (Ed25519, HWID-bound, own expiry, no remote revoke) are part of the dedicated licensing layer.
